So You’ve Been Thinking of Starting a Garden

Starting a garden is something that everyone should do at least once in life. Many people find a lot of happiness in caring for and growing a garden. Even if this is the first time you have ever started your own garden growing a few basic plants should be pretty easy. There are so many different types of information available today that even brand new gardeners should be able to learn how to grow a new garden. Obviously gardening is not simple. It can be very difficult work sometimes! Here are some hints to help you if you are thinking of starting a garden of your very own.

Make your dirt better before you start planting. Not every patch of dirt is identical. In fact, the dirt that is already in your yard is probably not the best for growing plants at all, which might be why you’ve had trouble growing a garden in the past. Different types of seeds have different nutrient needs.

Prepare the ground before you plant. The simplest way to prepare your garden for planting is to spread organic refuse across the soil. To improve the quality of soil, compost is best but if used a few months ahead of time, grass clippings and mulch also work well. Your plants will benefit from the nutrients left behind by the compost that you have spread. Most of gardening involves following a routine. As time passes you will get into a routine and you will start to know instinctively what needs to be done in your garden each day. You will eventually figure out when your garden needs compost, when it needs weeding, when it needs nutrients and if it needs more water. Let yourself figure out a routine and then all you have to do is follow it. The reason many beginner gardeners’ gardens die is because they get bored and forget about or ignore the amount of work that needs to be done to keep the garden healthy.

There are whole lists of easy to grow plants that you can use for inspiration when it comes time to look for seeds. Cosmos, Russian sage, zinnias, coneflowers and black eyed Susans are also fairly easy to grow.

Obviously there are other options available even for first time gardeners. These plants are simply the easiest to plant and grow. It is a good idea to get used to growing “easy” flowers before you try to move on to “complicated” flowers. Everybody can start a garden. The thing you need to do if you want your garden to be successful is to make sure that you use the right steps to grow your garden. Planning out your garden ahead of time and learning how best to care for your plants is important if you want the garden to thrive. Once you’ve learned how to keep your garden healthy and have figured out your gardening routine, doing your regular “chores” will feel a lot more like fun than work. You might even discover that you eagerly anticipate working in your garden each day!
